The right to study for a doctoral degree can be granted to a person who has a Master’s degree or a corresponding Finnish or foreign degree and who, before the end of the application period, has completed advanced studies or matching studies in the major subject of the postgraduate degree that the person is applying for. The matching studies may refer to studies in a related discipline or studies in a field that provides an exceptionally interesting, multidisciplinary combination. The decision on replacing advanced studies with matching studies is made by the professor of the discipline. If you have completed matching studies, you should contact the discipline’s professor already before applying in order to check their validity. Those who have completed matching studies are usually assigned supplementary studies to strengthen their knowledge of the major subject of the doctor’s degree. If a dissertation is of exceptionally multidisciplinary nature, the degree awarded may be Doctor of Philosophy. Note! Regarding the major subject of social work, to be admitted you must have completed major subject studies in social work or university-level studies in social work corresponding to the major subject as stated in the Act on Qualification Requirements for Social Welfare Professionals (272/2005). Applicants seeking the right to pursue doctoral studies based on a foreign degree must demonstrate that they are capable of completing the studies and that they have a good command of the Finnish language or the English language .
